HAMILTON — July 18, 2022 — Hamilton votes to extend a $4 million Community Preservation Committee grant for town hall renovation while shelving a fall ballot push. The Select Board and CPC voted jointly at the July 18 meeting to push the construction start deadline two years to November 2024, citing competing capital demands that include a possible new regional elementary school estimated to cost north of $40 million and an athletic fields project in the $12 to $13 million range. CPC Chair Jay Butler reported fiscal year 2022 state CPA matching funds hit 43.8 percent, yielding total CPC revenue of roughly $739,000, and said a $20 million state trust fund addition approved the same day could push the match above 40 percent again next year. Finance and Advisory Committee member John McGrath argued the "most critical financial opportunity" facing the town was securing Massachusetts School Building Authority reimbursement at 47.6 percent for a new school, framing the town hall push as a risk to that effort. The board also voted unanimously to rename Donovan Fields on Sagamore Street to Masconomet Field, contingent on confirming the designation is not considered culturally disrespectful.
